Four-star PG visits Gators

Florida is taking positive momentum from its Elite Eight run to the recruiting trail.

On Thursday, Florida hosted four-star Class of 2018 point guard Devon Dotson for an unofficial visit. The 6-2, 175-pound Dotson is reportedly a strong Kansas lean, but it didn’t stop UF’s coaching staff from making a strong pitch to convince the Charlotte, N.C., native to come to Gainesville. Dotson has also received offers from North Carolina and North Carolina State and is ranked No. 34 in ESPN.com’s Top 60 2018 prospects.

“Owns elite speed and quickness as his frame is sturdy, strong and dependable enough to absorb bumps and contact,” ESPN.com said in its scouting report on Dotson. “With his burst off the bounce he applies pressure to a defense as he will push it with straight line speed at the rim to score or find a teammate.”

The Gators also are in the mix for a pair of other top 2018 prospects — power forward Emmitt Williams (6-8, 210, No. 7 ESPN Top 60) and small forward Nassir Little (6-6, 210, No. 51 ESPN Top 60).

In addition, Florida has reached out to graduate transfer Cam Johnson to gauge his interest in joining UF’s squad next season. A 6-foot-8 wing, Johnson averaged 11.9 points and 4.5 rebounds while shooting 41.5 percent from 3-point range for Pittsburgh last season and could provide insurance if junior forward Devin Robinson decided to keep his name in the NBA draft. As of now, Florida is at its scholarship limit of 13 and will be one over when point guard commitment Michael Okauru signs his letter of intent next week. The Gators would need both Robinson and center John Egbunu to keep their names in the NBA draft, or for a returning player to transfer, to open a scholarship spot for Johnson next season.
