Florida's statistics through week 5

The game against Mississippi State did not impact the overall statistics that much, but I suspect that #5 LSU this weekend and #2 Georgia in a couple weeks will change that.

Week 4 vs Week 5 (changes from last week highlighted):
  • #1 in blocked kicks (8-way tie)
  • #8 in blocked punts (multiple-way tie)
  • #7 in punt return average
  • #1 in forced turnovers
  • #1 in fumbles recovered
  • #2 passing yards allowed #DBU (note that LSU is not in the top 50)
  • #3 in turnover margin (+9)
  • #15 in Red Zone offense, 0.95, 9/9 pass TD, 3/3 rush TD, 7/8 FG, 19/20 total (up from #17)
  • #24 in yards per completion
  • #42 in scoring (35 PPG, 177 PTS, down from #26)
  • #14 in passing touchdowns (12 TDs) (Feleipe Franks, down from #7)
  • #42 in passing efficiency (Feleipe Franks rating 147.9, down from #29, rating 155)
  • #92 in total offense
  • #19 in total defense
  • #3 in player forced fumbles (3, 7-way tie w/ Jachai Polite, down from #1)
  • #22 in player forced fumbles (2, multiple-tie C.J. Henderson and James Houston IV, down from #9)
Overall the Gator offense is starting to show where it will likely end up at the end of the year, ranked around #90. This is the norm for Florida over the years, but a ranking like this will not be excused in about two years. The defensive numbers took a hit against Kentucky, but otherwise they are relatively stout at #19 in the country. The Gators will likely end up the year ranked around that same position.

What we need to watch for is some kind of offensive identity, and some explosive plays that are not called back by holding penalties.

Right--especially the idea of a "relatively improved" offense ( um, something like 106th to better-than-90th?)= "acceptable now, but NOT in a coupla years"!
You can see Franks making steady (if incremental) improvements in his game, and even more promising is how Mullens & Co. design offensive gameplans to hide/minimize our flaws and weaknesses (starting mainly with that weak and THIN O-line), and maximizimg our strengths to attack the OTHER teams' "flaws and weaknesses". Just wait til he's got a lot more of his kinda players (on BOTH sides of the ball: That'll be a FUN offense to watch...and as for the D, well, lets hope Grantham sticks around for a FEW seasons, at least: You can see the beginnings of what can be, maybe sooner than most expected, a new "Gator MACHINE" being planned and assembled right NOW in Gainesville.

...I don't know how it'll all play out in practical terms this coming Sat. against LSU--but THEY haven't exactly looked like "worldbeaters" to me...Our D can press them, I think--and in a close game I LIKE our chances, OUR COACHING and personnel vs theirs. The "experts" will call it an upset if it happens, but this is how "transition" LOOKS. Once we GET there, well, it'll be a whole different deal.

If it makes you feel better, the offense is ranked at #92, but the adjusted ranking is about #40 when accounting for the opponent's talent and statistical rankings. When accounting for the Gator special teams giving the offense a short field and the defense getting turnovers, the adjusted offense ranking is around #20.

What this tells us is that coaching has improved, but the personnel on offense are still the same more or less from the offenses that ranked around #100 over the past several years. Until more of these players graduate or enter the draft, the offense will need help from defense and special teams. In a few years when Mullen has an offense entirely recruited and coached by his staff, there will be absolutely no excuses for an offense ranked outside the top 20.

That's GOTTA be The Plan. I am told that we are "going all in" on 4- and 5-star O-linemen in and OUTTA Florida due outta the next two recruiting classes. That "fresh bodies rotating in throughout game, right into the 4th quarter" approach is Mullens' definite intent. We get that, all will be fine. The rest will take care of itself.
Can't WAIT to see it. Whole different feeling.
