Florida Gators get chance for revenge in rematch against the UConn Huskies

Ga8or22

Eventis sultorum magister.
Florida will get a chance to avenge at least one of its two 2013-14 losses on Saturday at At&T Stadium in Arlington, TX as it is set to take on UConn for the opportunity to advance to championship game of the 2014 NCAA Tournament.
The Huskies and Gators fought down to the wire in their regular-season match-up on Dec. 2, 2013 with UConn taking down Florida 65-64 at home in Stoors, CT by outscoring UF 6-2 over the final 34 seconds with point guard Shabazz Napier draining a second-chance game-winner at the buzzer.
Connecticut’s team is entirely different. It was led by a three-guard lineup during the first meeting, but Omar Calhoun has played his way out of the starting lineup and even the team’s rotation. He didn’t play a minute in Sunday’s win over Michigan State.
With Calhoun out of the starting lineup, it’s still Ryan Boatright and Napier in the starting backcourt but Kevin Ollie now starts a more traditional lineup. DeAndre Daniels, who had 14 points and seven rebounds in the first matchup, is joined by senior Niels Giffey in the starting lineup. His 6-7 frame gives the Huskies more size.
Phillip Nolan, who started the first matchup and played only 11 minutes, is now the team’s starting center. The sophomore is 6-10 and 212 pounds, but he struggled while guarding Young on December 2.
Both teams will downplay the significance of the rematch this week, and it likely doesn’t have any predictive value for what will happen on Saturday in Texas. However, there has to be an extra chip on Florida’s shoulder while getting another chance at a team it last lost to.

Watch the first game and you can see that it was a closely contested game. The Gators were behind 29-30 at the half, and both teams scored 35 points in the second half, with UConn sealing the win in the waning seconds of the game. The lead changed back and forth 14 times with 7 ties, and neither team was able to pull ahead by more than 8 points at any time in the game.

Key statistics to watch for:
  • Points in the paint-UF 32,UCONN 14.
    • The Gators did well in the paint, and should be able to do the same in the rematch.
  • Points off turnovers-UF 14,UCONN 24.
    • Yuck. Turnovers. This will probably determine the game. The Gators have done a good job taking care of the ball in most games, but even against Dayton they did get a bit sloppy. The Gators should be able to win this one by taking care of the ball.
  • 2nd chance points-UF 12,UCONN 11.
    • Both teams are pretty closely matched on 2nd-chance points and rebounding. The Gators have been sloppy at times with rebounding. At one point against Dayton, they were 0-for-3 in one 2nd-chance opportunity with three successive missed buckets after shots or rebounds.
  • Fast break points-UF 6,UCONN 2.
    • The Gators can do the fast break, so it would be interesting to see them do it again.
  • Bench points-UF 3,UCONN 12.
    • The Gator bench clearly needs to help out, especially if the game is close again.
  • Score tied-7 times. Lead changed-14 times.
    • This tells us that the teams are evenly matched. The teams have evolved slightly since the last meeting, but it should still be close.
  • Last FG-UF 2nd-00:18, UCONN 2nd-00:00.
    • Another stat showing that UConn can be dangerous in close games, especially with 18 seconds on the clock.
  • Largest lead-UF by 8 1st-05:49, UCONN by 5 1st-01:31.
    • Expect more of the same with less than 8 points differential scoring, unless the Gators turn a corner with dominating defense and fast break/ fast rebound offense.

UConn was lucky last time, I'm hoping it won't happen again. Plus I believe Michigan State choked against UConn. I hope the Gators take them seriously.

The Gators as a team can definitely hang with the Huskies, but it may come down to one matchup, Scottie Wilbekin vs Shabazz Napier, and how much the referees control the fouls. On film, Napier and Boatright get away with lots of pushing and leg contact. The Gators tend to get called a lot for fouls, even when our players are being sent to the locker room for injuries.
