Dan Mullen has hired Charlton Warren from Tennessee to coach defensive backs for Florida. Warren has also coached special teams, but it is unclear at this time how Mullen will share the special teams role. Warren is known for his recruiting process and his ability to coach players to perform above their scout rating, especially at Air Force where players tended to be smaller and slower than competition. He has coached in 7 bowl games in 10 years, and has generally found success in each of his jobs.

Warren Profile Coaching Experience
  • 2017 Tennessee, Assistant Coach, Defensive Backs
    • Coached Tennessee secondary that allowed the second fewest passing yards in the SEC (1,950) in 2017 and was one of the strongest units on the squad.
    • Coached Special Teams unit that was one of just five schools in the SEC to return a kickoff for a touchdown.
  • 2015-17 North Carolina, Secondary
    • Coached the Tarheels secondary that had the 10th best passing defense in the NCAA in 2016 allowing just 180.6 yards through the air. He played a major role in developing a defense in 2015 that improved 14.5 points per game from the precious season, the most improvement by any Power-5 program in the country.

That first year also saw the Tarheels pass defense improve in both pass efficiency and yards per pass to the tune of the most improved of any team in the country. That year they led the ACC in interceptions, turnovers gained, and passes defended in a year where they played for an ACC Championship.
  • 2014-15: Nebraska, Assistant Coach, Secondary
    • Coached Nebraska secondary that ranked second nationally in opponent completion percentage and fifth in pass efficiency defense in 2014
    • Coached three Nebraska defensive backs to All-Big Ten honors in 2014, including second-team safety Nate Gerry
  • 2012-13: Air Force, Associate Head Coach, Defensive Coordinator and Assistant Coach (Secondary)
  • 2008-11: Air Force, Assistant Coach (Co-Defensive Coordinator/Secondary/Recruiting Coordinator)
    • Helped develop a first-team All-Mountain West defensive back for three straight seasons from 2009 to 2011, including Reggie Rembert who earned first-team All-America honors in 2010
    • 2011 Air Force defense ranked third in passing yards allowed and sixth in pass efficiency defense
    • Air Force was second in the nation in passing yards allowed in 2010, allowing just 147.8 yards per game
    • The 2009 Air Force defense ranked in the top 20 nationally in passing yards allowed, total defense and pass efficiency defense
  • 2005-07: Air Force, Assistant Coach (Secondary/Recruiting Coordinator)
Playing Experience
  • 1995-98: Air Force Academy (Defensive Back)
Personal
  • Education
    • Bachelor of Science in Human Factors Engineering, Air Force, 1999
    • Master of Arts in Business, Georgia College and State University, 2003
  • Family: Wife, Jocelyn; Children, Jayree, Teya, Chase

Also an one time Military officer to boot.

Exactly! Hua Air Force! Aim high! Fly, fight, and win!

Lieutenant Warren began his military career at the Academy in the admissions office as the Southeast U.S. admissions coordinator for the minority enrollment office from 1999-2000.

He then went to Warner Robins AFB, Ga. as a 63A Acquisitions Manager, from 2000-03 where he was the C-130 avionics program manager for the Air Logistics Center. While stationed there, Warren earned an MBA from Georgia College and State University.

In 2003, Captain Warren was stationed at Eglin AFB, Fla., as the GBU-38/ GBU-54/ Mk-82 joint direct attack munitions (JDAM) program manger for the Air Armament Center. Warren was honored as part of the weapons program team of the quarter in 2003 and the direct attack group company grade officer of the quarter in 2004.

In 2005, Captain Warren was given the opportunity to return to his alma mater as an 81CX Instructor at USAFA, where he served the remainder of his time on active duty.

Note: I believe his active duty career ended in 2011, and he hired onto the USAFA athletic staff as a civilian. He should have been promoted to Major in 2011, so I assume he elected to separate from the Air Force rather than take the promotion and have to leave his coaching position. I do know that we have several Air Force friends in common, since we both worked in similar career fields on similar weapons systems over the past 20 years.

More it seems we are getting a fine mix of experienced and successful innovators, AND hot young up'n'comers full of excitement, vision and imagination to find talent, then together build them into a unit that will fight together to eventually be something special: CHAMPIONS.

Meanwhile, ON the field we are naturally walking a finer, more precarious line.
The possibilities are uniformly upside--but necessarily risky (goes with the territory this time of year, I suppose):
Main (and most emblematic) example of "lose one as you try'n upgrade with another" is at QB, I suppose--hard to say what degree of cause'n'effect was workin' on either side of the equation, but prev (pre-Mullen) commit Coral bolted for Ol' Miss on the heels of Jones' official visit to G-ville this past weekend. Now, it's more than Jones' being higher rated nationally overall: He's a MUCH better fit in Mullen's dual-threat system, and Coral was reportedly "rethinking" from the moment Mac and in particular a couple of our former recruiting stalwarts were gone.
Overall, we are MUCH better fixed with Jones coming--IF he comes, and that's the risky part of course: Jones and his mom do have a long relationship (since his 9th grade, while Mullen was hitting his stride at MSU and was the first major college coach to came after him), but he IS still an "early commit" at Ohio State...Same time, Urban sorta inadvertantly helped US by going out and signing a "pretty good but prob not AS good" dual threat QB when Jones didn't entirely shut down his visits quick enough for Meyer after committing.
Word is it's now down to us or FSU if he flips. I'd like to think we have a good shot, but who knows, let's face it. This guy looks to have all the tools we need to make a difference, and soon...but again, who KNOWS? We've had WAY too much experience in "can't miss" prep QBs who somehow DO miss.
Still, he has all the things we need in the kind of system Mullen will be working towards--and damnit, we GOTTA have a break coming in this game of talent-roulette!!!
'Course, it could be said I'm counting on TWO breaks here, but I read it THIS way:
The game of recruiting is an inherent gamble start to finish, a STRING of risks akin to chess with people as pieces, each with as much free will and human foibles as the coaches competing for their services.
That just leaves the ONE "break": If we get him, please oh PLEASE let him be, if not "the next Tebow" (it'll be a long, long time 'fore we'll see HIS like again), all I ask is that we get someone who lives up to the potential that is so far there for all to see.
