Boynton to sit out practice, should still be OK for BYU

Sophomore guard Kenny Boynton will sit out practice Monday, but Florida coach Billy Donovan said he still expects Boynton to play Thursday in UF’s Sweet 16 matchup against BYU.
“We fully expect him to play,” Donovan said. “He’s not going to do anything (Monday) in practice. He definitely has some discomfort there, but I don’t think it’s any discomfort that will prevent him for playing.”
Donovan said Boynton is not on crutches or in a boot. He’s also encouraged that the swelling on Boynton’s ankle went down significantly within the first 24 hours of the injury.
“I’m still a little cautious of where he’s at because I haven’t seen him sprint, cut, change direction, do those kind of things,” Donovan said. “Kenny has had some ankle problems during his career. He’s sprained that ankle quite a bit at different times throughout his career. So I also believe there’s a mental hurdle for him that he’s going to need to get over.”
Boynton is second on UF at 14 ppg and also has played an important role as its top perimeter defender. Boynton said last week he wouldn’t mind another shot guarding BYU standout guard Jimmer Fredette. Fredette, the nation’sa leading scorer at 28.4 ppg, scored 37 points if UF’s 99-92 double-overtime loss to the BYU in the first-round of the 2010 NCAA Tournament.
“I think Kenny would start off him,” Donovan said. “That’s what we did last year. But I’m hopeful we could move some different people on him during the course of the game.”
