Boom! It’s over for Gators

It’s all set up for Will Muschamp to have a sweet homecoming Saturday in The Swamp. His team is healthy, confident, improving and riding a three-game winning streak. The Gators, on the other hand, are limping badly and regressing on both sides of the ball.

Still, the Gators are a double-digit favorite Saturday, which is hard to fathom. I’m not sure the UF offense is even capable of scoring in double figures after seeing their inept performance a week ago at Arkansas, where the offense produced all of three points.

Muschamp, of course, badly wants to beat the Gators and show everyone it was a mistake to fire him two years ago. He’ll come up with a great defensive game plan (just like he usually did when he was here) and make life miserable for Austin Appleby and the staggering offense.

On the other side of the ball, the Gators are facing an improving and balanced offense that has started going up and down the field under true freshman quarterback Jake Bentley.

So, overall, what we have here is a team getting better going against one that is short-handed and heading in the opposite direction.

Maybe the best thing that could happen to the Gators is for Appleby to falter, forcing Jim McElwain to go with promising true freshman Feleipe Franks at quarterback. As it is now, the Gators have zero momentum in terms of the program moving forward. Maybe Franks can bring that spark that starts turning things around and gives the Gators something to build on here in the final few weeks of the season and generates excitement heading into the offseason.

Right now, this is a program that seems stagnant, with little or no reason to feel excited about the future.

With all the injuries and the problems on offense, the Gators are in for another ugly and frustrating afternoon that just might draw some booing in The Swamp.

Boy, wouldn’t that be sweet music to Muschamp’s ears.

Prediction: South Carolina 20, Florida 6
