Some observations following Florida’s 81-66 win over South Carolina at the O’Connell Center
— For the second straight game, Florida was able to win the battle of the boards without starting center John Egbunu. The Gators outrebounded the Gamecocks 34-30, though South Carolina had the slight edge on second-chance points (8-6). It was a collective effort, led by seven rebounds from sophomore guard KeVaughn Allen. Center Kevarrius Hayes and forward Devin Robinson had six rebounds apiece.
— Redshirt freshman forward Keith Stone got back to looking like his old self on Tuesday night. Stone snapped an 0 for 19 skid from the floor with a putback basket in the first half and finished with two points, three rebounds (all offensive), and two assists in 11 minutes off the bench. The 6-foot-8 Stone had been bothered the past two weeks by balance issues following a viral illness. “He’s starting to look more like himself and we’re going to need him to guard some fives (centers),” Florida coach Mike White said.
— For the second straight game, Florida center Kevarrius Hayes had four fouls, but this time around, two fouls were on the offensive end. Both were questionable whistles, but the 6-foot-8, 219 pound Hayes needs to be careful on both ends of the court to avoid foul trouble. Ideally, you’d like to have Hayes to use up those fouls on the defensive end instead of the offensive end.
