Beyond the arc: 3 takeaways from UF’s 78-61 win over Belmont

Some observations following Florida’s 78-61 win over Belmont on Monday night in Tampa:

— With John Egbunu and Kevarrius Hayes, Florida has two capable centers patrolling the paint. Egbunu had 12 points and eight rebounds against Belmont and his improved free-throw shooting (11 of 16 from the line for the season) is encouraging to see. Hayes had seven points, four rebounds and two blocked shots in 17 minutes off the bench and did a nice job forcing a travel on Belmont forward Evan Bradds, who is among the most efficient players in all of college basketball. Hayes already had 11 blocked shots through UF’s first four games after recording 20 blocks all of last season.

— Kasey Hill and Chris Chiozza each had three steals to spark UF’s defense on Monday night, but neither point guard is bringing much offensively to the table at this point in the season. Hill was 2 of 11 from the floor and had Florida coach Mike White fuming when he botched a 3-on-1 fast break late in the first half by being a little too unselfish instead of taking an easy uncontested basket. Chiozza, meanwhile, finished the game with an assist-to-turnover ratio of 1 to 2. Florida will need more from its point guards this weekend against higher-level competition at the AdvoCare Tournament in Orlando.

— Redshirt freshman forward Keith Stone had a nice confidence-building game for the Gators with four points, two assists and one blocked shot in 16 minutes off the bench. Stone checked in early when starter Justin Leon went out with a finger injury and helped spark UF’s 15-0 run to start the game with four points and active play on the defensive end of the floor.
