Some observations following Florida’s 77-72 loss to Gonzaga on Friday night:
— Despite a poor shooting night, Florida kept itself in the game by outscoring Gonzaga 18-9 on second chance points and 13-3 in points off turnovers. Florida had just eight turnovers and Kasey Hill played one of his best games at the point this season with 8 points, 7 assists and just 2 turnovers. The Gators scrapped, particularly in the first half.
— Senior forward Canyon Barry made the first mistake I’ve seen him make this season when he missed a dunk on a breakaway late in the first half. Devin Robinson also missed a hard dunk earlier in the game when he could have put it in more softly. Those four points could have given UF a more substantial lead in the first half, which it turned out the Gators needed considering Gonzaga wore the Gators down with its size, depth and shooting ability in the second half.
— Florida’s improvement from the free-throw line (22-24) should pay dividends for the Gators down the road in SEC play. At this point in the season, it appears the sports psychologist is working.
