Beyond the arc: 3 takeaways from UF’s 70-63 win over Ole Miss

Some observations following UF’s 70-63 win over Ole Miss at the O’Connell Center.

— Working his way back from a hamstring injury, Florida junior center John Egbunu looked more comfortable and confident offensively in the second half against Ole Miss. Egbunu finished with 7 points and 5 rebounds in 23 minutes and finished on a pretty up-and-under move against Ole Miss center Sebastian Saiz in the second half. The Gators are going to need some inside scoring from Egbunu on nights when they are not as hot from the perimeter.

— It was disappointing to see Florida junior forward Devin Robinson not crash the boards as hard as he did in his previous three games. Robinson had 11 points but 0 rebounds on Tuesday night against Ole Miss. The 6-foot-8 Robinson had averaged 7.7 rebounds in his prior three games and used his athleticism to make an impact in UF’s 81-72 win at Arkansas. With his leaping ability alone, there’s no excuse for Robinson not to be grabbing 5 to 10 boards a night.

— Don’t look now, but free-throw shooting is starting to become an issue again for the Gators. Florida went 11 of 21 from the foul line and is just 23 from 42 from the line in its first two SEC games. Point guards Kasey Hill and Chris Chiozza combined to go just 1 of 7 from the line against Ole Miss and missed some free throws in the final three minutes that allowed Ole Miss to hang around. Florida coach Mike White said that Chiozza and Hill need to stay on the floor late in games to handle pressure and has faith both will shake their recent slumps from the foul line. “I have faith that Kasey will get back to shooting them like he did the first 10 games of the season,” White said.
