Beyond the arc: 3 takeaways from Florida’s 68-66 loss to Vanderbilt

Some observations following Florida’s 68-66 loss to Vanderbilt in the O’Connell Center

— Considering Florida’s slow offensive starts in each of its last three games, it may be time to consider moving senior forward Canyon Barry into the starting lineup before it’s too late. Barry didn’t get into the game until the 15:04 mark in the first half and had a hard time getting into the flow of the game, finishing with six points and two rebounds in 17 minutes. Barry is UF’s second-best offensive player behind KeVaughn Allen, and having him on the floor earlier in the game with Allen could allow the Gators to get off to quicker starts. With redshirt freshman forward Keith Stone misfiring, Florida only got bench eight points, well below its season average.

— Florida junior center John Egbunu’s stat line (six points, six rebounds, six turnovers) reflects a player that remains lost offensively. It’s also gotten past time to trust Egbunu on the floor late in a tight game, due to his poor free-throw shooting. Egbunu’s missed free throw with 2:07 remaining allowed Vanderbilt to extend its lead to three points and create the breathing room it needed to win the game.

— Credit Florida junior forward Devin Robinson for playing harder this week, despite UF’s struggles. Robinson is athletic enough to impact the game in a number of ways, but consistency has always been an issue. We’ll see if it carries over to next week as Florida has back-to-back road games against LSU and Oklahoma in a critical stretch.
