Aaron Hernandez, of Bristol, Connecticut, elected to forego the family tradition of attending the University of Connecticut and chose to play tight under underUrban Meyer from 2007 and 2010. Aaron shined at tight end as Urban Meyer learned how to best use his skills both as blocker and receiver. He saw considerable action at TE his freshman year due to injuries to starter Cornelius Ingram. Against the Oklahoma Sooners in the BCS National Championship during his sophomore year, Hernandez led the Gators in receiving yards with 57 on five receptions, as the Gators defeated the Sooners 24–14 to win their second national championship in three seasons. In his junior year, Aaron became a favorite target for Tim Tebow, and Aaron led all Gator receivers with 68 receptions, 850 yards, and 5 TDs. For his contributions, he earned the John Mackey Award as the top tight end in college, and was selected first-team All-SEC and All-American.
