Yes and no. Remember that Grier took a banned substance, and the NCAA does not allow any wiggle room with suspensions. Certain things cannot be guaranteed to an athlete no longer on scholarship. Mac cannot hold a roster spot for a QB not on scholarship, nor would it have been a good idea to bring a non-scholarship athlete into practice in October 2016 and split practice repetitions with a kid who has not thrown a ball in a year. That being said, Mac offered Grier the opportunity to compete for his spot beginning in October 2016, and it would likely take a few practices to earn a starting role, assuming he could unseat the QBs ahead of him. Will Grier and his dad did not like that answer. They assumed Will could study the playbook for a year, then walk on campus in October and win the position back with some guarantee. Mac would not bend on a guarantee, and the Griers left.
I knew about the suspension but didn't know about the other stuff especially losing his scholarship over a suspension (so guys who beat/attack women OK but banned substance the NCAA can't have).
