THE FOUR-POINT PLAY, VOLUME FIVE

News Bot

News Bot
The Four-Point Play comes at you in between Gator baseball games and after a wild Saturday of hoop fever.

* We were having this debate the other day about who Florida’s best player is and we came to the conclusion the answer is none of the above. Seriously, I don’t think Florida has a best player. And that’s a big reason why the Gators are 22-5. Everyone contributes in their own way and at their own time. KeVaughn Allen carries the team for a half. Chris Chiozza makes some gutsy shots. Devin Robinson can’t make a thing but comes up with 10 rebounds. Canyon Barry is invisible for a while and then hits a big three. Kevarrius Hayes comes up big at the end. That’s how Florida beat Mississippi State. Of course, it helped that the Bulldogs couldn’t buy a three. Sometimes you need a little luck as well.

* I brush aside John Calipari’s rant defending Mark Fox and blasting North Carolina State for firing Mark Gottfried with five games to go. When is the last time you heard a coach say, “Yeah, he probably should get canned?” Instead, Calipari said this about Fox — “He keeps his team together. That’s coaching. Not when things are going good. It’s when things go south and you lose a bunch in a row, how do you get them and go.” That’s the thing. Nobody has ever denied that Fox is a good coach. But recruiting is a big part of coaching. It feels like Fox has a ceiling and it’s not very high.

* I’d love to see what he could do with FSU’s talent. The Seminoles lost on the road again and probably have slipped to a three seed. FSU has two more road games left at Clemson and Duke and a home game with Miami. Meanwhile, Arkansas picked a good time to get hot and if Tennessee can finish strong there is a chance for the SEC to get five teams in. Of course, that’s assuming South Carolina doesn’t blow it again.

* For your early-in-the-week viewing pleasure:

Monday — Miami at Virginia.

The Hurricanes are squarely on the bubble. They probably need one quality win to get off of it. Virginia just needs a win for its sanity.

Tuesday — South Carolina at Florida.

It’s the penultimate game of the season for the Gators in the O-Dome.

Wednesday — Louisville at North Carolina.

The Tar Heels look a lot like a team that could be feeling the confetti rain in April.
