They were the best team in Florida (despite losing to FSU), also Charlie Strong might be Taggart's replacement.
I didn't intend any putdown of S Fla--but I do think that out-of-state programs are looking for a way to break into our rich recruiting grounds. Common what-passes-for-wisdom out here is that Florida is the SECOND most fertile state for recruiting, after Texas. Personally, I think Fla's TALENT is every bit as deep and rich as Texas'--but where TX may have the edge is in their huge, highly competitive and fanatically-followed prep leagues, well-organized at every level and supported far and wide: these Texas kids often come to the next level, major college football, potentially more ready to step up and step in.
As for Strong, USF would be lucky to get him--and he'd no doubt flourish AT THAT LEVEL--but I suspect it'd FEEL like a step down for him. He doesn't NEED to be the "big fish in a small pond" at this point in his career. On the other hand, not like he has to worry about a cut in pay: Charlie's contract and ensuing firing included an outright BUYOUT--a TEN AND A HALF MILLION DOLLAR "buyout" that he was automatically owed-in-full the moment they let him go before allowing him to finish out the 5 years he was then signed to...No strings, no fine print or anything else that might prevent him from going wherever he likes. He can make any dealcwith anyONE, and keep whatever he is paid IN ADDITION to that buyout money.
I have to wonder if he wants that job, tho. I think he may have unfinished business, may prefer a chance to prove himself at the highest level on a similar national stage--what he was NEVER truly given at UT Austin.
What do y'all hear back in Florida? Here, there has been recurring talk (speculation that began along with the "fire his ass!" talk that started practically the moment he ARRIVED in Austin) that he might well end up at Miami at some point. I'd hate that--I LIKE Strong, and I'd have to immediately and thoroughly turn my back on him should he choose to step into THAT smelly quagmire.
