Florida could potentially be losing one of the standouts of its 2017 class.

Point guard Shai Alexander had re-opened his recruitment, according to a report from Canadian basketball website North Pole Hoops.

According to the report, Alexander has decided to take more visits before signing his letter of intent in next month’s early signing period. It’s unclear at this point what schools Alexander plans to visit, though Butler, Virginia Tech and UCLA all have interest in the Canadian standout. Alexander visited UF’s campus the weekend of Sept. 9.

The 6-foot-5 Alexander had committed to UF last November when he was a little-known prospect. Since, Alexander has risen to a four-star prospect that was rated No. 44 in the country in ESPN.com’s latest top 100 rankings. A native of Hamilton, Ontario, Alexander is about to start his second season at Hamilton Heights Christian School in Chattanooga, Tenn.

Over the summer, Alexander played with the Canadian National Team during the Olympic Trials and participated in the Nike Basketball Academy. Alexander has opened eyes with his size, court vision, scoring ability and 6-10.5 inch wingspan.

Florida still has two commits lined up for the 2017 class — four-star swingman DeAundrae Ballard and three-star forward Chase Johnson. But losing Alexander would be a blow to a Florida recruiting class that was rated among the top 10 in the country over the summer by most major websites.
