O’Dome renovation remains on schedule

As Florida unveiled plans for $100 million in improvements in facilities last week, work on the interior renovation of the O’Connell Center is continuing to make progress.

The O’Dome’s $64.5 million interior makeover remains on target to be completed by mid-December, according to Florida associate athletic director of external operations Chip Howard.

“Brasfield & Gorre are doing an outstanding job across the street,” Howard said. “We meet with them all the time, a couple times a week. They continue to be on schedule, confident about getting the certificate of occupancy when we need to. All the different trades have responded the way they wanted to respond, so I think we’re in pretty good shape.”

The interior renovation will include a new, modern overhang scoreboard, seat backs for all fans (which will reduce capacity from 11,500 to 10,500) and a new opening concourse. Davis Architects and Brasford & Gorrie have teamed up on the project.

“I get more excited every time I walk by the O’Connell Center,” said Florida athletic director Jeremy Foley. “I mean, that thing is going to be off the charts”

Due to the renovations, Florida will play its first 11 non-conference games away from campus. Earlier this week, Florida announced it also will play an exhibition game away from campus at Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Arena against Eckerd College (Oct. 26, 7 p.m.). Florida is scheduled to play its first game at the newly-renovated O’Dome on Dec. 21 against Arkansas-Little Rock.
