Finney-Smith accepts invite with Mavs

Florida forward Dorian Finney-Smith has accepted a free-agent invite with the Dallas Mavericks.

Finney-Smith agreed to terms to a partially-guaranteed deal and will report to the Mavericks’ summer league team in Las Vegas, according to sources. Dallas begins summer league play July 9 against the Miami Heat.

Finney-Smith chose the Mavericks over two other offers from undisclosed teams.

“It just came down to it feeling like the best fit, for me and my family,” Finney-Smith said.

The versatile 6-foot-8 Finney-Smith was projected as a possible mid-to-late second round pick, but did not hear his name called in Thursday night’s NBA draft.

“I’m just happy it’s over,” Finney-Smith said. “I’m just going to try to use it as motivation, as fuel to try to go out and get better.”

The Mavericks had one former Gator on their roster last season, 6-10 forward Chandler Parsons. But Parsons is a free agent this season and may or may not return to Dallas for the 2016-17 season.

Finney-Smith led the Gators in scoring (14.7 ppg) and rebounding (8.3) last season. He was a two-year starter for UF and in 2014 earned SEC sixth man of the year honors on UF’s Final Four team.
