Could Eli come back?

Florida received some good news on Monday when incoming freshman shooting guard KeVaughn Allen told the coaching staff he intends to honor his Letter of Intent and play for the Gators.

For new UF coach Michael White to hold on to three of four signees from the 2015 freshman class in the transition from departed coach Billy Donovan is a big first step for his tenure. With Allen (54th ranked by ESPN.com nationally, 18th ranked sg), Florida’s class remains respectable. It won’t stay ranked ninth in the country overall, but it should be a top 20 class with forwards Keith Stone (80th ranked by ESPN.com) and forward Kevarrius Hayes (68th ranked by ESPN.com).

And the Gators could get another shooting guard back on the roster — redshirt senior Eli Carter. Two weeks ago, Florida announced Carter was going to leave UF as a graduate transfer. But according to ESPN.com’s Jeff Goodman, Carter may have a change of heart.

Florida transfer Eli Carter told ESPN he is looking at Boston College, Georgetown, Clemson and is also considering staying in Gainesville.

Carter was UF’s third leading scorer last season at 8.8 points per game and is still on campus taking summer courses to finish his undergraduate degree. The 6-foot-2 guard needs to graduate by August in order to be eligible as a graduate transfer to play immediately elsewhere next season.

Without Carter, here’s an updated look at UF’s projected roster going into White’s first season in 2015-16. It includes 11 scholarship players and one walk-on:

Kasey Hill, pg, jr., 6-1

DeVon Walker, sg, rjr, 6-6

Devin Robinson., sf, so, 6-9

Dorian Finney-Smith, pf, rsr., 6-9

John Egbunu, c, rso., 6-11

Alex Murphy, f, rsr, 6-7

Chris Chiozza, pg, so, 6-0

Brandone Francis, g, so, 6-5

Kevarrius Hayes, f, fr., 6-9

Keith Stone, f, fr., 6-8

KeVaughn Allen, g, fr., 6-3

Schuyler Rimmer, c, rso., 6-11

Even without Carter, Florida still has plenty of depth at shooting guard with Francis, Allen and Walker. It should be an interesting three-player battle for the starting job, and the Florida coaching staff is tickled to have Allen, a player that fits White’s philosophy of running, pressing and taking the 3-point shot.
