Gators could get into NIT with sub-.500 record

Florida has made the postseason for 17 straight seasons under Billy Donovan.

That string could possibly continue, even if the Gators finish with a sub-.500 record.

According to NIT spokesperson and NCAA employee Jeff Williams, finishing with a record of below .500 does not automatically disqualify a team from NIT Tournament consideration.

“It’s something the selection committee would have to take a long, hard look at,” Williams said. “But no, it doesn’t automatically disqualify you. The committee uses the same criteria as the NCAA Tournament does, taking into account RPI, strength of schedule.”

Williams said the NIT Tournament selection committee is composed of former basketball coaches and is chaired by former Alabama and Vanderbilt coach (and Kentucky AD) C.M. Newton. It includes former North Carolina State coach Les Robinson, former Ole Miss and FIU coach Bob Weltich and former Tennessee (and Florida interim coach) Don DeVoe.

Florida is 14-15 (7-9 SEC) entering its home finale on Tuesday night against Texas A&M. According to ESPN.com’s daily RPI, Florida’s RPI is 85 and its strength of schedule is ranked 16th in the country. UF’s strength of schedule is bound to increase after a Saturday game at Kentucky and a possible second game with Kentucky in the SEC Tournament.

One NIT Tournament projection has Florida as a 7 seed facing Miami as a 2 seed in Coral Gables, Fla., in a rematch of a Nov. 17 game which Florida lost 69-67 at the O’Connell Center.
