Some observations following UF’s 63-50 win over Wake Forest:
– Florida coach Billy Donovan was disappointed with his team’s ball movement and player movement against the Demon Deacons. And Donovan didn’t cop to the number of moving parts throughout the season due to player injuries and suspensions and eligibility as an excuse. “We should be further along,” Donovan said. The Gators had a negative assist-to-turnover ratio (12-15) for the game. Florida fans must hope the Gators build more continuity in their halfcourt offensive sets heading into Southeastern Conference play.
– Coming off a career-high 25 points against Jacksonville, it was good to see junior forward Dorian Finney-Smith string together another decent performance. Finney-Smith wasn’t great shooting from the floor (5-13, 2-6 from 3-point range), but still found a way to impact the game with 16 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals. Donovan wants to see Finney-Smith string together a stretch of consistent performances scoring and rebounding, and maybe this will be a catalyst moving ahead.
– Junior guard Michael Frazier II has scored in double figures in all 11 of UF’s games this season. And yet, at times, Frazier has appeared to have difficulty dealing with the demands of being a marked player this season. Credit Frazier the most for mixing up his game by drawing contact and getting to the foul line, though he’s taken his share of lumps (Wake Forest was the second game he’s been forced to go to the trainer’s room this season due to a gash in his head). The demands of scoring appear to have impacted Frazier’s shooting the most. He went 1 of 7 from 3-point range against Wake Forest to drop to to 38.2 percent (29-76) from beyond the arc this season. For a career 44.6 percent 3-point shooter, that’s un-Frazier like.
