Beyond the arc: 3 takeaways from UF’s win over UAB

Some thoughts following UF’s 56-47 win over UAB:

– Florida coach Billy Donovan acknowledged that part of the offensive struggles in the halfcourt have to do with grasping the intricacies of his motion offense. Donovan says he tries to talk to his players about attacking schemes: “You can become very, very patterned, and very, very easy to scout. Or you can play with multiple options, where guys have to make reads and have to make plays. That is an area we’re struggling in right now. We struggle to find and let things develop. Because of that, we miss the open man. Maybe we don’t make the pass where it needs to be and where it needs to go. Sometimes our timing gets thrown off.” That can get better with time, but it’s hard to master with new players taking on different roles.

– I thought sophomore center Chris Walker took some positive steps Thursday night. Walker didn’t sulk going back to the bench and was productive in limited minutes by letting the game come to him. Walker had 7 points, 6 rebounds and 1 block in 11 minutes. His defensive positioning still needs work, but he came up with a big putback on an offensive rebound and hit two clutch free throws late in the second half to tie the score at 47.

– After a talk with Donovan, freshman point guard Chris Chiozza said he’s embracing his role as a defensive playmaker. Chiozza had six steals for the Gators on Thursday night, including two on the press. Chiozza has 14 of UF’s 36 steals on the season. He should be an asset for UF on the press throughout the season. Starting point guard Kasey Hill also played a more steady game with 8 points, 5 assists and just 1 turnover.
