A new voice in talk radio
1010XL will be a 50,000-watt AM sports station, beginning April 2.

The scope of sports talk radio in Jacksonville is about to change.

The First Coast will have a 50,000-watt radio station with a 24-7 all-sports talk format beginning in April. An official announcement is expected today.

By comparison, the two current all-sports talk stations in Jacksonville, WFXJ (930 AM) and WZNZ (1460 AM), broadcast on a 5,000-watt signal.

"1010XL, jax sports radio" will be the new moniker for the station that will occupy 1010 AM on the radio dial, the former home of WIOJ, which has a variety of news, talk shows, music and some sports talk. The new format, scheduled to begin Monday, April 2, will feature an all-sports talk lineup, along with some event coverage.

"This is a concept we have been putting together for nearly two years," said Steve Griffin, president of Seven Bridges Radio, which owns 1010XL. "The No. 1 priority in our concept has always been to have the right signal. With a 50,000-watt signal that will provide a clear sound from Brunswick [Ga.] to Daytona Beach and as far west as Lake City, we've accomplished that. Second in priority is to have a solid lineup."

That will mainly consist of radio personalities that currently are on the air at WZNZ (1460 AM). Among the most significant changes will be Frank Frangie and Mike Dempsey teaming up for a 4-7 p.m. show called The Press Box. Frangie said several other people from WZNZ also will move to 1010XL.

The 1010XL lineup also will include Sports Final Radio with Dan Hicken and Jeff Prosser from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m., The Rumble with Tom McManus and Sean Woodland from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., The Rick Ballou Show from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., and The Fight Night with hosts to be determined from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

The new lineup at 1010XL comes as a surprise to Henry Hoot, vice president of the Chesapeake-Portsmouth Broadcasting Corporation, which purchased WZNZ and several other Jacksonville stations last December.

"The only change that I've been told is that Frank Frangie is leaving the station," Hoot said. "Others are free to go, but I haven't been told anyone else is leaving. We plan to continue the all-sports format at 1460 and will fill any openings with ESPN Network programming."
