South Carolina Beats Florida in Buzzer Beater

The Florida Gators men’s basketball team suffered a tough loss last night in Columbia, South Carolina against the Gamecocks. South Carolina’s Zam Fredrick made a layup as time expired to lift the Gamecocks to a 70-69 victory over No. 24 Florida. The loss snapped the Gators’ 10-game win streak.

Florida (16-3, 3-1 Southeastern Conference) held a 67-60 lead with less than three minutes left before the Gamecocks began their comeback. South Carolina’s Devan Downey hit four straight free throws and a 3-pointer with 26.5 seconds left to cut the lead to 69-67.

The Gators just missed a couple of free throws down the stretch. They had every opportunity to put this game away. As for the last second buzzer beater? That’s all on Billy Donovan. He has to know that you need to stick a defender under their basket just in case. There’s no way a Gamecock should have been able to run down the court uncontested. At worst the Gators should have just speared Frederick and put him on the line.

I’ve got a video of it for those of you who missed it. I love the look of the Gamecocks fans in the stands prior to Parsons missing the free throw, they think the game is over.

Yes, an extremely dissapointing finish. Gators definitely had the game in hand and blew it. Missing free throws is very uncharicteristic of Donovan’s teams. And you can’t throw the blame for the easy layup. That was Werner’s man and he let him by. And yes, he should have at least fouled (and what I mean is tackled) him and made him go to the line instead of having the easy basket. That’s the kind of lack luster effort that Werner has displayed throughout his career at Florida.
